The Shield of Peace prevents your city from being attacked directly. That is the whole of what it does, and both of those words matter — directly, and city. Troops out on a march are not covered. Resources sitting on a mine are not covered. And one thing you own can walk an enemy straight past a shield that is fully active.
For most of the early game the discipline is simple enough to state in a sentence: shield before you log off, keep your resources under the protected cap, and do not leave a portal open. The rest of this lesson is why each of those is true.
What the shield does not cover
A shield stops a direct attack on the city. It does not stop the map from being the map.
- Marching troops can be intercepted and killed. A shield on your city does nothing for an army that is out.
- Resources on a mine are gathered, not protected. A full mine march is a target.
- Reinforcements block the shield entirely. You cannot raise a Shield of Peace while there are reinforcing troops sitting in your city, and nobody can reinforce a player who is already shielded.
That last one surprises people mid-crisis. If a clanmate has parked troops in your city to help defend it, your shield button does not work until those troops go home.
The loophole that empties cities
This is the single most expensive thing a new player can not know.
An open portal defeats your own shield. An enemy attacking through a portal you left open does not break your walls, because the attack never touches them. It does not bounce off your shield either. It engages your army directly, and if it wins, it plunders your building resources, your food, your silver and your Gold Ingots.
Shielded with an open portal is not shielded. It is an unlocked door in a wall you paid for.
Open the portal for the march. Close it after. A portal is a convenience with an attack surface, and the convenience lasts minutes while the exposure lasts until you remember.
Portals are genuinely useful — you can launch marches from one, and your clanmates can launch from theirs when it sits closer to a target than their own city does. None of that requires leaving it open once the march is away.
Where to put things so they cannot be taken
Attackers take what is reachable. Most of safety is making things unreachable before you go.
Resources under the protected cap. Your Warehouse protects a set amount, and it grows as the Warehouse levels. On a month-old Capitol-11 city, that looked like 830,000 lumber protected out of a three-million capacity, and 2.4 million food out of 4.7 million. Everything above the line is takeable.
Surplus as unopened tokens. Resource items sitting unopened in your inventory are not resources yet, and cannot be plundered. Banking overflow as tokens is how experienced players hold far more than their cap suggests.
Your best troops in a clan fort. Official expert advice is blunt about this: walls are not very reliable against strong players. Hide your best troops and your mercenaries in a clan fort rather than trusting the city to hold them.
Gold banked for a shield. A shield you cannot afford at the moment you need one is not a plan.
The offline checklist
The community shorthand is S.M.A.R.T., and it is worth running as a genuine list rather than a slogan:
- Shield up — and confirm it actually went up, not blocked by reinforcements.
- Mines empty — nothing of yours sitting out on the map.
- Army in a clan fort — the good troops, at least.
- Resources under the cap — surplus converted to unopened tokens.
- Tokens unopened — because opened, they become lootable again.
Being attacked in Total Battle is less catastrophic than in most games of its shape. Defenders earn Conquest Points, and during many events defensive losses revive with silver rather than gold. Losing a fight is a cost, not a disaster — losing a fight while holding everything you own in the open is the disaster.
