Clans 101

Why staying clanless is the worst opening mistake, and how to be worth having around.

New accounts do not start clanless, exactly. They start in an automatically generated clan, which is a different and worse thing — it looks like membership and delivers almost none of it. In an auto clan you cannot enter clan tournaments, cannot build clan buildings, and cannot touch clan technologies or bonuses. Everyone in it holds the rank of soldier, and nobody is coming to help you.

Join a real clan before your starter shield expires. Mobile players can pick one from the general list once their Capital reaches level three. It is the highest-return five minutes available to a new account, and it is free.

What a real clan actually gives you

The benefits are not flavour. They are four separate systems, each of which is large on its own.

Help. Every clanmate who clicks help on your queue shaves time off it. Requesting help on every building and every research node, before you reach for a speedup, is the single most repeatable saving in the game.

Gifts and chests. Clan chests are awarded for exploring a crypt or arena to a hundred percent, killing a heroic or epic monster squad, finishing top hundred in a tournament, or buying a package — and they are claimable by the whole clan. Your ordinary daily play pays your clanmates, and theirs pays you.

Technologies and bonuses. Clan technologies run across three branches — territory, allies and fortifications — and apply to every member. Clan bonuses are switched on by leadership using tractates produced in the Clan Temple, and how many are available depends on how many forts the clan has built.

Raids and reinforcement. Group marches at heroic monster squads pay a clan chest to everyone who joins. Reinforcements let a clanmate's army stand in your city while you sleep.

The twenty-hour clock

Clan chests expire twenty hours after they appear, and unclaimed ones are simply lost. Log in daily or give the rewards back. Leaving a clan forfeits any you have not claimed.

How to be worth having around

Contribution is visible in Total Battle. The history tab logs every member's resource contributions, dragon coins and speedup help, and the rankings show who is exploring crypts and earning Valor. Good clans read those numbers. So do the ones deciding who gets kicked.

  • Ask for help on every queue before spending a speedup. It costs your clanmates one click.
  • Give help back. Clicking help for each player individually sends exactly the same points as clicking help-all, so there is no reason not to use the fast button.
  • Crypt and run your arena daily. Finishing either drops a chest for everyone.
  • Turn up for raids. They are called with a gathering window — two, five, ten or thirty minutes — and everyone who arrives gets paid.

One piece of housekeeping worth knowing before you commit: once you leave a clan, you cannot rejoin that same clan for fourteen days. You can join any other clan immediately. Leaving in a temper is a two-week decision.

The Consulate, and the mistake everybody makes with it

Reinforcement only works if both the sender and the receiver have built a Consulate, which unlocks at Capitol level four and needs a large slot.

Here is the part that gets misremembered constantly. Your own Consulate grants bonus strength and health to your own units. It confers nothing on the armies other people send to you. When a clanmate reinforces your city, the bonuses on those troops are determined by the Consulate level in your city — the receiving one.

The practical version: if you are the person your clan defends, your Consulate is a clan-wide investment, not a personal one.

Before you attack anything

The game will let you attack almost anyone. Your kingdom will not.

Every kingdom runs its own Rules of Engagement — player-written law about who may be hit, when, and under what circumstances. They are social conventions, enforced by coalitions rather than by the game, and breaking them is the fastest way to get an entire clan zeroed. Ask in clan chat before you hit anything that is not a monster. There is a whole lesson on this later in the Academy; for now, ask.
