Captains: Your First Four

Who to chase, why depth beats breadth, and the thirty seconds that compound forever.

Captains lead your marches and carry job-specific bonuses, and the difference between a player who understands them and one who does not is not subtle. The trap is that captains feel collectible — there are a lot of them, fragments arrive constantly, and every new face looks like progress. Collecting is exactly the wrong instinct.

The one rule that governs all of it

A captain's bonuses apply only on marches that captain is leading. This is not how hero talents work — those are always on, everywhere, permanently. A captain sitting at home contributes nothing at all.

Everything else follows from that. A roster of twenty captains at level thirty is twenty captains who each do a little on one march at a time. A roster of four at level two hundred is four captains who genuinely change the march they lead. Depth beats breadth, and it is not close.

The rule

Focus fragments on three or four captains, not the whole roster. A wide shallow bench helps nobody, and fragments spent on a captain you will never field are gone.

The consensus first four

These four are picked for the same reason: they buff activities you do every single day, so their bonus compounds instead of firing occasionally.

CaptainJobWhy first
CarterCryptsThe universal number-one investment — crypting is daily and permanent
FarhadResearch speedMultiplies the largest compounding system you own
AuroraConstruction speedEvery build, every day, for the life of the account
StrorGatheringEvery resource march comes home fuller

After those, the roster widens by need rather than by rarity: Aydae or Cleopatra for combat, Amanitore for clan raids, Hercules for epic monsters.

Economy captains must be active before you start the job

This is the mechanic people lose the most value to, and it is invisible when it goes wrong — nothing warns you, the timer just runs at the ordinary rate.

The bonus attaches when the job starts. Switching Aurora in after you have queued a building does nothing to that building. Switching Farhad in after you have queued research does nothing to that research.

So the session has a shape:

  • Log in. Make Aurora active, queue your building.
  • Switch to Farhad, queue your research.
  • Switch to Carter, send your crypt runs.
  • Switch to whichever captain the current event rewards.

Thirty seconds of switching, and it compounds for as long as you play.

Levels, stars and the thresholds that matter

Captains have two separate progressions and they are paid for with different things.

Level runs to a cap of five hundred, though some captains stop improving earlier — Doria and Carter both cap their bonuses at three hundred. Most single-stat legendary and epic combat captains give 1% per level; their rare equivalents give 0.5%; narrow-scope captains give 2%. That per-level rate is how you compare two captains honestly, rather than by rarity.

Stars run to seven, and they are raised with captain fragments plus Essence of the Immortals. Fragments keep accumulating after seven stars with nothing to spend them on.

Two thresholds worth aiming at deliberately:

  • Level 45 unlocks a captain's faction buff. Get every captain you actually field past 45 before pushing any single one high.
  • Star 3 to 4 is a large jump — roughly 50% to 60% on the star bonus — and costs around 200 fragments.
Where fragments come from, and don't

Summoning Scrolls give five free common summons every twenty hours, five minutes apart, and one free elite summon in the same window. But Beowulf and Hercules fragments cannot be obtained from the Summoning Circle at all — no amount of summoning will produce them. And the Circle only opens once you have summoned the three basic captains: Aydae, Tengel and Logos.

Gear them, and time your summons

Each captain has three equipment slots, and gearing the captain you actually field is usually worth more than levelling one you do not. The official crypt-running loadout for Carter is the Tomb Raider and Omniscient sets with the Pioneer enchantment and an amber gem — amber being the gem that carries crypt exploration efficiency.

And save your scrolls. Summon Mastery events bonus specific captains; spending a stack of scrolls in an ordinary week when the same stack would have been boosted a fortnight later is simply worse.

When do a captain's bonuses apply?

CorrectNot quiteThis is the rule everything else follows from. A captain at home contributes nothing, which is why depth beats breadth.

You queue a building, then switch Aurora in. What happens?

CorrectNot quiteEconomy captain bonuses attach at the moment the job begins. Activate first, queue second.

What does level 45 unlock?

CorrectNot quiteGet every captain you actually field past 45 before pushing any single one high.

Which captains cannot be obtained from the Summoning Circle?

CorrectNot quiteTheir fragments come from elsewhere entirely. Summoning for them is wasted scrolls.
