Never Idle: Research

Valor Points, the trees that matter, and the trap of unlocking a tier you cannot feed.

Research is the quietest system in Total Battle and the one that decides the most. It runs in the Academy, it runs while you are asleep, and unlike a building it never occupies a slot you might have wanted for something else. The only way to lose at research is to leave the queue empty.

It is also the system that most clearly separates the two kinds of currency in this game. Buildings cost resources. Research costs resources plus Valor Points — and in some trees, Clan Points as well. Valor comes from killing monster squads. That single dependency is why the Atlas keeps telling you the map funds the city: an account that never marches at monsters ends up with an Academy it cannot afford to run.

The habit

Queue something before you log off, even something you did not plan. A mediocre node running overnight beats a perfect one you start tomorrow. Hours with an empty Academy are the one loss you can never make back.

What to research first

In the first week, three lines pay back faster than anything else, and all three should be pushed to roughly level ten before you get clever:

  • Map Resource Gathering — more per march, on every march, forever.
  • Guards Training Cost — cheaper troops compound into every army you ever build.
  • Crypt Exploration — the first nodes, which unlock and cheapen the daily crypt habit.

Notice what these have in common. None of them make a troop stronger. They all make an activity you were going to do anyway cost less or return more, which is what compounding actually looks like.

Deep pushes and cheap horizontal levels

Later, the tree stops being a list and starts being a budget. Two shapes of spending are worth knowing apart.

A deep push is driving one node hard because it gates something — a section of the tree, a troop tier, a building. Gate nodes have to be paid in full; there is no partial credit for being close.

A cheap horizontal level is taking a support node to level three or five and stopping. The first levels of a node are dramatically cheaper than the last ones, so a handful of nodes at level five will often give you more total benefit than one node at level fifteen, for a fraction of the Valor.

The working pattern for mid-game is to alternate: pay for the gate you actually need, then spread the change across cheap levels while you rebuild Valor.

SpendWhen it is right
Deep push on one nodeIt gates a tier, a building or a section you need now
Cheap levels across manyYou are between gates and want the most benefit per Valor
Saving ValorAlmost never — banked Valor is research not running

The tier-rush trap

This is the mistake that quietly ruins first months, and it is worth stating plainly.

Event difficulty scales with your highest unlocked Guardsmen tier, not your hero level. Unlock a tier and every event you enter gets harder, immediately and permanently.

That is fine when your economy can train and revive troops at the new tier. It is a disaster when it cannot. A player who rushes to Guardsman 5 with a food supply that supports a Guardsman 3 army has bought themselves harder events, more expensive losses, and no more power than they had the week before.

Check the gate before you chase it

Unlocking tier-5 guardsmen means every previous guardsman research at level ten and every city building at level twenty-five — and the research alone runs around 900 million Valor for each of archers, spearmen and riders separately. That is a campaign, not a purchase.

The honest test before unlocking a tier is not "can I afford the research." It is: can I train a full army at this tier, feed it every hour, and rebuild it after it dies? If any of those three is no, the tier will cost you more than it gives.

Things that make research faster

Research speed is worth spending on because it multiplies every node you will ever queue.

  • Farhad, the research-speed captain, active before you queue the node — captain bonuses apply to the job as it starts, not retroactively.
  • VIP level, which raises construction and research speed and caps at fifty percent.
  • Clan help, which shaves the timer with every clanmate click. Ask before you burn a speedup.
  • Academy level itself, which is why it belongs in the support four.

What currency does research need beyond ordinary resources?

CorrectNot quiteValor Points come from monster squads. It is the mechanism that makes the map fund the city rather than the reverse.

Event difficulty scales with…

CorrectNot quiteUnlocking a tier makes every event harder immediately. Do it only when your economy can train, feed and rebuild at that tier.

Why take several support nodes to level three or five instead of one node to fifteen?

CorrectNot quiteThe first levels of a node cost a fraction of the last ones. Between gates, spreading is the better buy.

When does a research-speed captain like Farhad need to be active?

CorrectNot quiteCaptain bonuses attach to the job at the moment it starts. Switching a captain in mid-job does nothing.
