The Academy · First Week Field Manual · Lesson 1 of 5

The Core Loop

How the whole game feeds one cycle—and where new players break it.

Total Battle looks like a city builder for about a week. Then it stops being one, and the players who never notice spend months upgrading buildings while everyone around them gets stronger. Underneath the city there is a single cycle, and almost every decision you will ever make is a decision about where to spend a turn of it.

The cycle runs like this. You build your city. Your city runs research around the clock. Research and buildings let you train troops. Troops march onto the Kingdom Map for resources, monsters and crypts. What the map pays comes home and funds the next round of building, research and training. Then a tournament arrives and you cash the whole thing in at once.

Read that again and notice which direction the money flows. The map funds the city, not the other way round.

What each arm of the map actually pays

The three things you can march at pay three different currencies, and they are not interchangeable. This is the part new players most often get wrong, because on the map they all look like the same activity.

You march atIt paysWhich buys
Monster squadsValor PointsAcademy research
CryptsGear materials, gemsPermanent equipment power
Resource tiles and minesFood, silver, lumber, iron, stoneBuildings and troops

Valor is the one that surprises people. Research is not bought with resources alone — the serious nodes want Valor Points, and Valor comes from killing monsters. An account that never marches at monsters has an Academy that eventually cannot afford to move, no matter how large its warehouses are.

Crypts pay in a different kind of currency again: gear materials and gems. Gear is the only power in the game that does not get diluted by the next patch or outgrown by the next tier. The player who ran their crypts every day for six months is wearing that difference, and there is no way to buy it back in a week.

The habit

Every session: queue a building, queue research, run your crypts, spend your marches. An idle Academy and a parked captain are progress you cannot recover later — the clock ran and you got nothing for it.

Why the queues matter more than the buildings

Almost everything in Total Battle happens on a timer, and most of those timers run whether you are watching or not. A building upgrade, a research node, a batch of troops, a march. What separates a fast account from a slow one is rarely a better decision — it is fewer hours with an empty queue.

That is why the advice is always to queue something before you log off, even something you did not plan. A mediocre research node running overnight beats a perfect one you start tomorrow morning.

Spend your starter advantages, don't hoard them

New accounts run with a set of advantages that most players badly under-use: construction that completes instantly, marches at roughly ten times speed, and troop revival at a fraction of normal cost. They are generous enough to feel like something you should save for a rainy day.

They are not. They expire — the usual marker is around hero or Academy level twenty — and anything left unspent when the timer ends is simply gone. Treat them as a window rather than a reserve, and grow hard while they last.

  • Build wide, not carefully. With instant construction, every upgrade you can afford is free time.
  • March far. Ten-times march speed makes distant tiles and monsters worth visiting.
  • Fight things that will kill troops. Cheap revival is the only period where losing an army is a minor expense.
The one that hurts

Players routinely sit on the starter window while they read guides and plan a build order. The window closes on a schedule, not on your readiness. A messy fast start beats a tidy slow one by a wide margin.

Where the loop breaks

Three failures account for most stalled accounts, and all three are the same mistake wearing different clothes — treating the city as the game.

  • The Academy goes idle. Research is the largest compounding return in the game and it runs for free while you sleep.
  • The captains sit at home. A captain doing nothing is a crypt not explored and a monster not killed, which is gear and Valor you never earned.
  • The city gets tall before the economy is wide. A high Capitol with nothing behind it produces an account that looks impressive on the rankings and cannot field an army.

Everything else in this course is detail. The loop is the lesson.

What primarily funds your city's growth?

CorrectNot quiteResource buildings help, but the map—monster Valor, crypt gear and gathered tiles—is where accounts actually grow.

What should your Academy be doing at all times?

CorrectNot quiteAn idle Academy is permanently lost progress. Research runs around the clock, including while you sleep.

Which currency does Academy research need that only monsters pay?

CorrectNot quiteValor Points come from killing monster squads. An account that never marches at monsters eventually cannot afford research.

Your starter advantages (instant builds, fast marches) are best…

CorrectNot quiteThey expire on a timer, not on your readiness. Anything unspent when the window closes is simply gone.
